About the Trehalose Symposium

Hayashibara Co., Ltd. has been hosting the Trehalose Symposium since 1997 with the aim of developing and disseminating research activities related to trehalose. For more than 20 years, with the support of the Japanese Society of Applied Glycoscience, researchers studying the properties of trehalose and its functionality have given lectures.

Trehalose is a disaccharide found in nature in things such as mushrooms, plants, insects, and microorganisms. It has long been known to protect cells and tissues under dry conditions in vivo. Previous studies have revealed that the physicochemical properties of trehalose, such as hydration force and vitrification properties, contribute to its cytoprotective action. In addition, with the advancement of applied research and practical use of trehalose, fields such as food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics now widely leverage trehalose's unique properties in their products. In recent years, it has become clear that trehalose has physiological effects on metabolic syndrome and autophagy. It is no exaggeration to say that trehalose has played a role in the development of life-science. Furthermore, its contribution to environmental science is also attracting attention, as its functionality is being studied in a wide range of fields such as agriculture and livestock. Further development of trehalose research is highly anticipated.
